Chapter 2 Installing and Upgrading VMware Workstation
WorkstationforLinuxrequiresthattheparallelportPC‐stylehardwareoption
(CONFIG_PARPORT_PC)bebuiltandloadedasakernelmodule(thatis,itmust
besettomwhenthekerneliscompiled).
TousetheWorkstationHelpsystem,youmusthaveaWebbrowserinstalledon
thehostcomputer.
Theinstallationtopicdescribesaninstallationfromtheinstallationmediaincludedin
theWorkstationmediakit.Ifyoudownloadedthesoftware,thestepsarethesame
exceptthatyoustartfromthedirectorywhereyousav
edthedownloadedinstallerfile,
notfromtheLinuxdirectoryontheinstallationmedia.
Thebundleinstallerletsyouinstalltheproductinonestep.IftheGUI‐basedinstaller
fails,runtheinstallerfilewiththe--consoleoptioninyourterminal.
VMware-Workstation-<xxxx-xxxx>.<architecture>.bundleisthenameofthe
installerfile.Inth
ename,<xxxx-xxxx>isaseriesofnumbersthatrepresenttheversion
andbuildnumbers,and<architecture>isi386orx86_64.
To install Workstation on a Linux host
1LogintoyourLinuxhostwiththeusernameyouplantousewhenrunning
Workstation.
2Inaterminalwindow,becomeroottoperformtheinitialinstallationsteps:

do
ThecommandyouusedependsonyourLinuxdistributionandconfiguration.
3Ifyouareinstallingfromtheinstallationmediainsteadofadownloadedfile,
mounttheWorkstationinstallationmedia.
4 Changedirectoriestothedirectorywheretheinstallerfileislocatedandrunthe
followingcommand:
sh VMware-Workstation-<xxxx-xxxx>.<architecture>.bundle
IfyouareusingtheWorkstationinstallationmedia,thisfileisintheLinux
directory.

OTEOnRedHatEnterpriseLinux5.1hostsandpossiblysomeotherLinux
distributions,thebundle‐basedinstallerlaunchesacommand‐linewizardratherthan
aGUIwizard.
